Jonathan Marte receives O'Toole Family scholarship to Villanova University.

Jersey City student receives scholarship to Villanova

Jonathan Marte, a rising junior at Hudson Catholic High School, has received a full academic scholarship to Villanova University through the O'Toole Family Presidential Scholarship program.

Terry O'Toole, a graduate of Villanova University, established the scholarship in 2013 to help high-achieving students within the Archdiocese of Newark attend Villanova University. The Archdiocese of Newark operates all Catholic parishes and Catholic schools in Bergen, Union, Hudson and Essex counties.

The scholarship will cover Marte's full tuition, as well as his room and board at Villanova.

Marte, who maintains a 95 GPA, described the application process as rigorous and said the essay was the hardest part. To prepare for his time at Villanova, he will take several summer programs at the university. He also intends to take several college courses at Saint Peter's university.

Catheterization Center opens

Hackensack Meridian Health Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen has announced the official opening of the hospital's new Cardiac Catherization Lab.

The new Cardiac Catheterization Lab features the most advanced diagnostic equipment available and highly-skilled physicians and staff to perform the latest in diagnosing heart disease, utilizing the state-of-the-art Siemens Artis Zee camera and 55-inch screen for viewing images.

In addition to Cardiology, the new lab also serves to diagnose and treat vascular issues in the legs, carotid arteries, abdominal aneurysms, with balloons or stents, or other technology. Interventional Radiology procedures will also be performed in the lab as well.

Hackensack University Medical first certified for Parkinson's Disease

Hackensack University Medical Center is first hospital in nation to obtain a disease specific certification designation for treatment of Parkinson's Disease from the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals.

A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Hooman Azmi at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) has developed a program for improved care of patients with Parkinson's disease who have been admitted to the hospital. On June 15, this program received special designation from the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals as the first hospital in the nation to have developed such a program.

The Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals certifies and accredits hospitals in the US and internationally. Through their Disease Specific Certification Accreditation, the Joint Commission recognizes special expertise in the care of a particular patient population. While many hospitals have Disease Specific Certification Designations for various programs, HUMC is the first in the nation to obtain designation for the care of hospitalized Parkinson's patients.

Holy Name Institute for Wound Healing opens

Holy Name Medical Center announced the opening of its Institute for Wound Healing, located at 699 Teaneck Road in Teaneck. The Institute offers advanced care in the treatment of non-healing, chronic wounds and their related conditions and diseases. An aging population and increasing rates of diabetes, obesity and the late effects of radiation therapy contribute to the chronic wound epidemic. Untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.

Students named to dean's list

Peta-Gaye Ricketts, of Jersey City, has been named to the Spring 2018 Dean's List at American International College (AIC) in Springfield, MA.

Rachelle S. Hegarty, Mageto M. Omare, Tapan Patel, and Sandy G. Seedhom of Jersey City were named to the Dean's List at Boston University from the Spring 2018 semester.

Virginia Mason, of Hoboken, was named to the 2018 spring semester dean's list at Simmons College in Boston.

Local residents earn degrees

Arpitha Dudi, of Jersey City, has earned a Master of Science in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Vanessa Charles, of Weehawken, received a Masters of Business Administration from Clark University. Charles is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society.

Lauren Healy, of Union City, was awarded a Bachelor of Science in social work during Salve Regina University's 68th commencement.

Hannah Rose Reichert, of North Bergen, graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Reichert earned a B.S. summa cum laude in biology.

Brianna C. Conroy, of Secaucus, received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Business Administration and Management from Boston University. Also receiving degrees from Boston University were Jonathan M. Bernstein, of Jersey City, who received a Master of Laws in Graduate Taxation, Satya P. Patel of Jersey City, who received a Doctor of Physical Therapy in Physical Therapy, and Daniel L. Libatique of Jersey City Doctor of Philosophy in Classical Studies.

Freeholders OK acceptance of funds

The Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders authorized the application and acceptance of funds from New Jersey Transit Corporation for $1,410,000 for transportation services, leasing 12 minibuses for eligible residents of Hudson County.

These funds will provide transportation services to eligible residents living in Hudson County which include transportation to medical appointments, recreational activities, nutrition sites, educational experiences and certain employment locations.

Also authorized was the renewal $181,976 contract with Rutgers Global Tuberculosis Institute-New Jersey Medical School for the provision of specialized medical services at the Hudson County Chest Clinic.

The grant will be used to support the Hudson County Chest Clinic, physician services, nurses' services, mantoux tuberculin testing, x-ray services, dispensing of anti-TB medications and related services. The grant term is from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.
